Materials and basic techniques: A masterclass with traditional upholsterer, Katherine S.
Curious about the materials you’ve discovered in older furniture? Confused about what it
is and why you can’t find it at the local supplier? Wondering if there’s a way to bring more natural fibers to your workroom? This is the class for you . . .
Traditional upholstery is a challenging and deeply respected specialty within our craft – this one day masterclass is a rare opportunity to scratch the surface with a trained and experienced professional. Katherine S. will share with you her knowledge of traditional materials, from coir to scrim, from cotton to curled hair. Learn about where to find them, and when to use them. Katherine will show you the layers and techniques used to create a traditional seat with coir and a stitched edge roll. This is a participatory masterclass: information will be primarily presented through lecture and demonstration, with opportunities to practice steps and stitches alongside Katherine on our in-house project piece.
Cost: $189, includes lunch and light breakfast from Workhorse Coffe
About Katherine . . .
While living in Belgium for 12 years, Katherine began her upholstery training with a year long program at the Nijverheid School in Antwerp. She later travelled to Cornwall, England to continue in traditional upholstery with a program accredited by the AMUSF (Association of Master Upholsterers and Soft Furnishers) In addition to practical experience, Katherine completed research on 20th Century Furnishings and had her work carefully evaluated by a team of Royal Upholsterers. She then travelled to the Netherlands to complete a series of woodworking classes in Turnhout.
Katherine now lives and works in the Twin Cities, restoring antiques and heirlooms, sharing her passion and experience with a very fortunate community of clients and peers.
