FLC Upholstery 200: Fundamentals
Tools and Supplies List
Tools
- Measurement Tools: Square, Yardstick or 60” welt ruler
- Scissors
- Sewing Machine (walking foot preferred, with 5/32” single welt foot)
- Steamer or iron
- Safety glasses
- Foam saw or electric knife (with silicone)
- Tear back tools: staple lifters, pliers, hammers
- Pneumatic staple gun with compressor
- Webbing stretcher
- Heat gun or hair dryer
- Size M metal bobbin (used here as a marking tool)
- Tack hammer
- Curved needle – variety pack
- Drill with 5/16” drill bit
- C.S. Osborne foam cutter #22 , OR 1”- 1.25” hole saw bit
- Utility knife or razor blade
- Button press, with #22 button die/setter
- 6”-10” button straight upholstery needle
- Curved Needle Set Round point, 3” or preference
- Upholstery Regulator
- High-Temp Hot Glue Gun
Supplies
- Marking supplies: Chalk / Pencil / Sharpie
- Upholstery thread (nylon 69 – Beaver is a good color to start with)
- 2 yards zipper chain with 2 slides (#4.5 nylon coil zipper)
- 3/4 oz. bonded polyester batting – 27” wide by 14 yards long (approx ¾” thick)
- 12 yards 5/32” fiber welt cord
- 5 yards Silk film (or use thin plastic garbage bag)
- Staples: ¼”, 3/8” and 1/2”
- Seat webbing: , slip seats and coil spring, side chair your choice – jute or synthetic (for 210 Slip Seats-Fabric, 225 Coil springs, and possibly 251 Side Chair)
- Burlap – 5 yards
- Silicone spray
- Foam and Fabric Adhesive spray
- 10 yards Bottom cloth
- ( 9 ) Springs 9-gauge, or reuse the springs in an existing ottoman or chair. If building 2 x 4 practice frame, use 7” springs (for 225 Coil Springs)
- Button Twine
- Hand Sewing Thread
- Webbing Nails
- Spring Twine
- (22 at least) #22 wire eye button forms
- Plastic wrap or shrink wrap (for wrapping protective material around show wood)
- Cardboard Tack Strip (10 strips or 1 roll)
- 3/4” Edgeroll, if needed for side chair project
- Deck padding, if needed for side chair project
- Pli-grip, if needed for side chair project
- Masking tape
- Hot Melt Glue Sticks
Furniture/Plywood
- ( 4 ) slip seats with open frames, OR plywood slip seats with center cut out, for webbing practice (for 210 Slip Seat-Fabric)
- ( 2 ) 13” round circle of plywood at least 1⁄2” thick (for 211 Slip Seat-Vinyl)
- ( 1 ) Sample ottoman frame with at least 6 springs set in 2×3 arrangement OR home-built practice frame – approx 23” x 23” outside measurement, built from 2×4 lumber (for 220 Coil Springs)
- ( 1 ) plywood board at least 19” x 23” x 1/2” (for 212 Slip Seat-Boxed)
- ( 1 ) side chair with wood arms (for 251 Side Chair)
Fabric
- 1 yard of 54” wide upholstery weight fabric, no pattern (for 205 Boxed Cushion-Plain Seam)
- 1.5 yards of 54” wide upholstery weight fabric, no pattern (for 206 Boxed Cushion-Welt)
- 2 yards of 54” wide upholstery weight fabric, no pattern (for 210 Slip Seat-Fabric)
- 1 yard of upholstery weight vinyl, no pattern (for 211 Slip Seat-Vinyl)
- 1 yard of upholstery weight fabric, no pattern (for 212 Slip Seat-Boxed)
- 1.5 yards of 54” wide upholstery weight fabric, no pattern, with a visible weave (for 225 Diamond Tufting)
- 3 yards fabric for side chair project (for 251 Side Chair)
- 3 yards – Bleached Muslin (for 251 Side Chair)
Foam
- 3” thick (17” x 20”) (for 205 Boxed Cushion-Plain Seam)
- 3” thick (17” x 20”) (for 206 Boxed Cushion-Welt)
- 1” – 1.5″ thick – enough to cover all four slip seats plus 4” both directions (for 210 Slip Seat-Fabric)
- 1” – 1.5″ thick (15” x 15”) (for 211 Slip Seat-Vinyl)
- 2” thick (15” x 15”)(for 212 Slip Seat-Boxed)
- 2” thick (20” x 24”) (for 225 Diamond Tufting)
- Foam appropriate (for 251 Side Chair) project. FLC used:
– Seat: HR-2245 (High resiliency 2.2# density 45# IFD)
– Back: HR2418 (High resiliency 2.4# density 18# IFD)
