FLC Upholstery 200: Fundamentals
Tools and Supplies List

*Items listed in red are needed for first five weeks of the program

Tools

  • Measurement Tools: Square, Yardstick or 60” welt ruler
  • Scissors
  • Sewing Machine (walking foot preferred, with 5/32” single welt foot)
  • Steamer or iron
  • Safety glasses
  • Foam saw or electric knife (with silicone)
  • Tear back tools: staple lifters, pliers, hammers
  • Pneumatic staple gun with compressor
  • Webbing stretcher
  • Heat gun or hair dryer
  • Size M metal bobbin (used here as a marking tool)
  • Tack hammer
  • Curved needle – variety pack
  • Drill with 5/16” drill bit
  • Foam hole cutter #22
  • Utility knife or razor blade
  • Button press, with #22 button die/setter
  • 6″-10″ button straight upholstery needle
  • Upholstery Regulator
  • High-Temp Hot Glue Gun

Furniture/Plywood needs

  • 4 slip seats
  • Two: 13” round circle of plywood (at least ½” thick)
  • Sample ottoman frame or similar
  • One: plywood board (at least ½”) 19” x 23”
  • One side chair with wood arms

Fabric

  • 1 yard of 54″ wide upholstery weight fabric, no pattern
  • 1.5 yards of 54” wide upholstery weight fabric, no pattern
  • 2 yards of 54” wide upholstery weight fabric, no pattern
  • 1 yard of upholstery weight vinyl, no pattern
  • 1 yard of upholstery weight fabric, no pattern
  • 1.5 yards of 54″ wide upholstery weight fabric, no pattern, with a visible weave
  • 3 yards fabric for side chair project
  • 3 yards – Muslin

Foam

  • 3” thick (17” x 20”)
  • 3” thick (17” x 20”)
  • 2” thick – enough to cover all slip seats plus 4” both directions
  • 2” thick (15” x 15”)
  • 1” thick (15” x 15”)
  • 2” thick (20” x 24”)
  • Foam appropriate for your side chair project. (FLC used: Seat: HR-2245 (High resiliency 2.2# density 45# IFD) Back: HR18 (High resiliency 2.4# density 18# IFD))

Supplies

  • Marking supplies: Chalk/pencil/Sharpie
  • Upholstery thread (nylon 69)
  • 2 yards zipper with 2 slides (4.5 nylon coil zipper)
  • 3/4 oz. bonded polyester batting – 27” wide by 14 yards long
  • 12 yards of 5/32” fiber welt cord
  • Silk film – 5 yards
  • Staples: ¼”, 3/8″ and 1/2″
  • Seat webbing: slip seats and coil spring, side chair
  • Burlap – 5 yards
  • Silicone spray
  • Adhesive spray for foam/fabric
  • Bottom cloth – 10 yards
  • Springs – 9 (or reuse the springs from the current system)
  • Button twine
  • Hand Sewing Thread
  • Webbing nails
  • Spring twine
  • #22 wire eye button forms (at least 22)
  • Plastic wrap or shrink wrap
  • Cardboard Tack Strip (10 strips or 1 roll)
  • Edgeroll, if needed for side chair project
  • Deck padding, if needed for side chair project
  • Pli-grip, if needed for side chair project
  • Masking tape
  • Hot Melt Glue Sticks
